NSBE Mission
NSBE's mission is " to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community. "
NSBE History
In 1971, two Purdue undergraduate students, Edward Barnette (now deceased) and Fred Cooper approached the dean of engineering at Purdue University with the concept of starting the Black Society of Engineers (BSE). They wanted to establish a student organization to help improve the recruitment and retention of black engineering students. In the late 1960's, a devastating 80 percent of the black freshmen entering the engineering program dropped out. The dean agreed to the idea and assigned the only black faculty member on staff, Arthur J. Bond, as advisor. (The late Dr. Arthur Bond was the Dean of Engineering at Alabama A&M University, where be helped build the program. The School of Engineering Building is named in his honor.)
The torch symbolizes members' everlasting, burning desire to achieve success in a competitive society and positively affect the quality of life for all people. The lightening bolt represents the striking impact that will be felt by the society and industry due to the contributions and accomplishments made by the dedicated members of the National Society of Black Engineers.
Headquartered in Alexandria, Va., NSBE offers academic excellence programs, scholarships, leadership training, professional development and access to career opportunities for thousands of members annually. With over 2000 elected leadership positions, 18 regional conferences and an annual convention, NSBE provides opportunities for success that remain unmatched by any other organization

Our Chapter History
The N AL NSBE Professionals was chartered in November 1990. The organization began in order to increase minority participation and excellence in the fields of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The organization has implemented several programs in the community to accomplish this goal. The programs include college and pre-college tutorial services, working with the local schools system, sponsoring workshops in order to educate the community on topics dealing with engineering and applied science, and hosting activities of the National Society of Black Engineers Junior Chapter (NSBE Jr.) Our chapter has established College Initiative relationships with NSBE Collegiate Chapters at Alabama A&M University, University of Alabama in Huntsville and Oakwood University. The Professionals chapter has shown steady growth since the beginning and additional programs will be implemented in the coming year.
Over the past thirty three years, the North Alabama Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers has sponsored over 70 minority students to SPACE CAMP through scholarships. The Chapter remains extremely active in the community by participating in partnerships with several elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and colleges. Some of the many activities include sponsoring the Annual Scholarship Awards Banquet and tutoring students from elementary school through college. N AL NSBE Professionals promotes its membership and the community-at-large through beneficial professional and personal development seminars and workshops, and through support of worthy causes and organizations. The North Alabama Chapter is a member of the Region III NSBE Professionals.
